The Passing of Dr. Bogalech Gebre

AWSAD would like to express its profound sorrow over the loss of the Founder of KMG Ethiopia and women’s rights advocate, Dr. Bogalech Gebre.

We are deeply shocked and saddened by this news. Our hearts and thoughts go out to all the families, friends and colleagues of the late Bogalech Gebre.
Founder of KMG Ethiopia and women’s rights advocate Bogalech Gebre (Boge) grew up in the 1960s in a small village in the Kembatta district of Southern Ethiopia.
Boge was like any typical Ethiopian girl –she fetched water and helped her mother with cooking and chores. And, like any typical Ethiopian girl of that time, she suffered female genital mutilation.
After realizing that she had been given great opportunities in her life; opportunities that were unheard of for the people in her village, in 1997, Boge returned to Ethiopia from the U.S. in order to give back and help change the lives of girls in her community. #KMG (Kembatti Mentti-Gezimma-Tope) Ethiopia was born.

KMG believes that communities, women and men working harmoniously together, have the power to make informed decisions and make great change for themselves.
As Boge says: “In the long run, stronger women create stronger communities, stronger women create a stronger nation, and stronger women create a stronger Africa.”

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to all families who lost their loved ones.
